ANPR parking: from entry events to clear parking charges
A number plate is only the starting point. Clear parking records also need paired events, agreed tariffs and a practical exception-handling process.

A parking system needs to connect what happened at the entrance with what happened at the exit. AcreIOT combines number plate recognition cameras with time-series event records to calculate recorded parking durations and apply the parking operator’s configured charges. The operating rules deserve as much attention as the cameras.
Begin with the entry and exit events
Define what counts as an entry and what counts as an exit for each lane or observation point. Each event needs a timestamp, a camera or lane identity and a number plate observation. The parking workflow then needs an agreed way to pair those observations into a stay.
- Which lanes or observation points capture arrival and departure?
- How will camera clocks and event timestamps be checked?
- What happens when a plate is unreadable or an event arrives late?
- Who can review and correct an exception?
Agree on the charging rules explicitly
Recorded elapsed time and a payable amount are different parts of the system. The operator should define the tariff, any grace period, time bands, rounding rules and treatment of stays that cross a charging period. Those decisions should be reviewable rather than hidden inside an unexplained total.
Design for open and closed parking lots
A closed lot may connect the parking record to an automated barrier, while an open lot may use the same event history to support an operator’s collection and review process. Map the physical site, the available capture points and the intended operating procedure before selecting a gate or payment integration.
Keep exceptions visible
A missing exit, a repeated entry or an uncertain plate reading needs a clear status. Staff should be able to see the underlying events, understand why a stay needs review and record an authorised correction. Access to plate records and camera evidence should match the responsibilities of the people using them.
Review the complete journey
Walk through arrival, recognition, event matching, charge calculation and departure with the site team. Include unusual cases in that review. A useful specification explains the parking operator’s rules as clearly as it describes the camera and database installation.
